Studying in the United States is a dream for lakhs of Indian students. Every year, more than 4.2 lakh Indians head to the US to pursue higher education. But before you pack your bags, one important step stands between you and your American dream- the US F-1 student visa.
Recently, the US government has introduced five important updates to the F-1 visa that every international student, especially Indians, should know. These changes impact your visa interview, OPT/STEM OPT applications, cap-gap extension, post-COVID learning rules, and fee structure.
Earlier, many students renewing their F-1 visa could skip an in-person interview through the interview waiver program. But starting September 2, 2025, this will change.
If you’re planning to work in the US after your studies, you’ll apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT) or STEM OPT extension. Good news: USCIS has now expanded Premium Processing for these applications.
Why it matters:
The cap-gap period (extension of F-1/OPT status while waiting for H-1B) has been extended.
During COVID, F-1 students were allowed to take more online courses than usual. That temporary relaxation ended on May 11, 2023.
What it means now:
The US remains the top study destination for Indian students, but recent F-1 visa updates mean you need to plan better.
Staying updated on these changes can save you time, money, and stress. With the proper preparation, your American education journey will be smooth and successful.
